Hi, can you tell me at what salinity do you all keep your marine tanks at for live rock and fish?

Second, can you tell me if a green spotted puffer and bumble bee gobies be kept in full marine conditions ? Right now they are in 1.010

Hi, most people run there tanks at somewhere between 1.022 and 1.026. I run mine at 1.026 as this is the average of the worlds oceans but people have had good resultes running them at slightly lower. I'm not really sure about the S.G that brackish fish should be kept at but I would think that 1.010 sounds about right but I'm sure someone else will answere this for you

Your Puffer is a true freshwater fish. It only tolerates brackish due to its river habitat, as is true with most brackish fish.

It will actually prefer freshwater instead of brackish.

Green spotted puffers will not tollerate freshwater or they will be doomed to die. They have a much higher rate to catch disease in FW. When GSP become slightly older, they will move into the oceans or into areas of full blown salt water. Go up to 1.022 for your GSP. ;)

Hi, thanks for the replies. Right now my salinity is at 1.010 I was hoping to oneday be able to add some "liverock" into that tank with my puffer and bumble bee gobies.

What is the min that live rock has to be kept at?

Thanks for the help

Lynn, I will work on your Qs backwards.

First, I can't tell you at what SG, (Specific Gravity, Salinity), Live rock will fail to be so. Most reefkeepers would blanch at the idea of such experimentation with an expensive commodity such as live rock. we try to maintain ocean levels. I do know that any coraline algae on the rock will fade to white, and feel pretty certain that most organisms would perish below about 1.02.

I hate to have an open disagreement with a member. saltwater Newbie says a Puffer should be acclimated to full salt conditions, and I said freswater. I must say I was hasty. My data shows fresh as young, then to only a brackish level as they mature.

If you go to the oddball forum, there are some puffer keepers in there that could answer better.

But for your homeworl assignment, you can look at these I have found for you. :D

These should help you understand your fish better.

Youre right, GL, some puffers are found in FW, but GSP's are found in brackish and marine conditions. I'm on a puffer forum were the admin has her GSP's in full marine conditions. Her's are old and big, and healthy. It's accually good for GSP's to be in marine conditions when they are older. If you have a GSP in FW it will die or be very unhealthy, you can put a dwarf puffer in FW and it will live and thrive well. Here's the board:
