I recently saw a tank with Sailfin Mollies @ my lfs, I read about them on the internet but im sure someone here @ the forum keeps them and i was wondering about any additional info you could give me...

Thankyou!

Tom

My experiences:

First of all, they get big. One of mine reached 5 1/2", so a big tank is good! :) They were pretty peaceful fish, much like regular Mollies. The males I found to be a little aggressive with each other, so I seperated them out into seperate tanks to avoid too much conflict. The females are very peaceful, but wooow...they are fry machines! :p And that's saying something, seeing as how I love fry to death.

I've also heard Sailfin Mollies can be acclimitised to Brackish, and sometimes even Saltwater. I've personally never tried it..but I'd guess at least they could get to Brackish.

Probably. I'd just go with 2 females though, to cut down on fry numbers. Sailfins can have over a hundred fry per month...so, that's a lot of babies!

thanks anna, I may even just do 3 females so eventually they will not give birth anymore...what other tankmates can i place in with them? Danios? Swordtails?

If it's just females, basically anything you want. They are usually very peaceful fish, but you get the odd one that can be aggressive. Danios and Swordtails should be fine though. :)

I have a 96 Litre tank with 1 male and 1 female sailfin molly. I also have a smaller tank with 1 mickey mouse platy 6 neon tetra and 1 dwarf loach. Can I put the fish from the smaller tank in with the sailfin's? Just wanted to make sure they would get along.

I would think so. As long as your salfins aren't aggressive, they shouldn't bug any of those fish. Oh, and since Loaches are schooling fish, you might want to consider getting at least a couple more. :)

Alright then, heres what im planning to do...

29 gallon:

3 sailfin mollys - all female
5 danios
3 spotted corys
1 small pleco ( 2 1/2 - 3 in. )
around 3-4 female dwarf gouramis (no intention of breeding them)

Substrate:

1 1/2 inches of sand

lots of plants + rocks
