I have managed to track down some Sagittaria subulata (dwarf sagittaria) and the seller can also give me some red stemmed sagittaria but doesn't have the latin name for it after some research I believe that it would be Sagittaria lancifolia also known as S. platyphylla. Can I mix these two species up without issue in a tropical aquarium at around 26C treated with ferts, easy carbo and a light (haven't purchased yet so can't say exact wpg aiming for 2-3wpg). The tank will also have some Dracaena sanderiana (lucky bamoboo) growing in and then above the tank to allow it to breath.

Hoping to have a grass with tree effect and I think the red stems as a grass would stop the greens from blending together. I also want the grass to have floating flowers hence why I want to know exacts about the species, I will be trimming the majority of leafs down to 2-3" in the middle and 6" at the edges. I have read quite a bit but majority of sites are just repetition was hoping for some info from some of your home books or personal experience

Patience is a virtue, it's only been two days. :good:

If you want to create a homogenous grass effect, then I'd stick to one species.

I'm not a big fan of Dracaena species in tanks, as they are non-aquatic, but I've seen it done. It usually just rots after a while.

How big is the tank? I think you might be over-killing the lighting. You can grow sags very well with less than 2WPG, especially if you're using T5s or other forms of higher output lighting. If it is a smaller tank, though, like 10-15g or less, then you're on track with the WPG.

I am still a teenager for one more year so plan to hold on to my impatience and big headedness until I reach my twenties.

I know dracaena aren't aquatic but they can be grown with their roots submerged and so that is how I wish to grow them up and out of the tank to around a foot above the waterline making them around 70cm tall which is about half height for dracaena sanderina. I got the dracaena today and the top leaves are 5-8cm above the waters surface(with the exception of one plant which is 3cm below the water line but with the highest leaves on the waters surface. I may take this one out to grow as a house plant for a while then return it once larger) so the plant should be able to breath and not rot.

Tank size is 8 gallons and the light is currently an 11W arc pod I am thinking of getting a single 60cm long bulb to place a foot above the tank to promote the dracaena to grow higher and cast a general light over both my tanks as they are side by side. My other tank contains xmas moss and elodea and with the moving of the arc pod is now unlit. Do you think 24W would be a good target given that it has to travel such a distance?

Well, in all fairness, I do put Pothos cuttings to get developed roots into aquariums. It happens so much faster than if you just planted the cutting. With that in mind, I can see where you're going with the Dracaena. Just be careful and watch for any signs of decay.

Hmm. I think sags might be a might too large for the tank to get the effect you want. Have you thought about E. tennelus? The leaves are finer. There is also a lileaopsis species, L. mauritius, which has finer leaves than the sags and will grow under low light.

The Draecaena should be alright if the room is bright enough, I'd focus on getting enough light onto the tank. Have you thought about 2 11W? It may work better.

I was thinking of having 2x11w lights one on each tank at tank level then the bigger 60cm long light attached to the shelf above increasing the ambient light of the area. Out of the grass I want flowers hence why I chose the sag although perhaps I will grow the sag on the outer edges as a border to the tank mixed in with the dracaena and try some of the plants you suggested in the centre so that I am not constantly trimming

Lilaeopsis mauritiana I assume you meant. I have read that it needs higher lighting to remain short and develop short and densely rather then tall and thin. Do you think my lighting will be enough to keep it shorter also E. tennellus is suppose to have the same issue.

Both plants stayed pretty short for me with 28W of T5 over 10g, and 28W of T5 over 20g, so it's your call. E. tennelus has flowers too, but they are not as showy.

I will of course do the obligatory post to show how everything works out. Thankyou for your help.
