I have read that SAEs eat hair Algae, and one aquariust claimed that his golden barbs do too. Will 1 or 2 SAEs in my 55g tank really make a difference in the war agaisnt hair algae? Maybe there are other species, fish or otherwise, that will take care of the problem if I am able to stop the algae growth now.

True SAEs do a good job on eating hair algae however you wouldn't be treating the cause of the algae. There would still be an underlying reason as to why you were getting that lgae. That reason is preventing your plants from growing aswell as they could do, therefore you are getting the algae.
