I have 3 adult SAE (I'm guessing about 4 year old) and one is behaving oddly. It seems to be breathing very fast and is less active than usual. It seems to be exhausted, lying much stiller than usual and leaning over to one side. I can't see any damage on it.

It was in a part planted Juwel 180l tank, established 8 years with the following fish in it:
3 SAE
6 corydora
6 neon rainbows
5 dwarf red gourami
1 zebra danio (I know it should have company, but I don't want any more and it's as old as the tank)
1 harlequin rasbora (again I know it should have company but it's the last survivor of 10 and about 6 years old)
There may be a couple of ottos but I never see them.
100s small MTS - hover the big ones out.
2 assassin snails

The temp is 24C.
I've just done water tests and ammonia and nitrite are 0. I don't do nitrate as it comes out of the tap at 40.

I lost a harlequin about a month ago - it got caught somewhere and damaged it's side and I couldn't save it. But that the only change in about 2 years.

I've moved the sick fish to a 20l tank, the filter isn't mature but I'll keep an eye on the stats and do up to 100% water changes as necessary. I've dosed with melafix as that's all I've got at the moment.

Has anyone got a clue what might be wrong with him?

Thank You

Cathy

I'm not sure what's wrong tbh. All I can suggest is keep him somewhere warm and quiet, keep him clean and keep your fingers crossed.

Any similar problems with the other fish in the tank? Could be a problem with the O2 levels in the tank if so..

RIP.

No problems in main tank. I don't think it's O2. It's not heavily planted just java fern and a few crypts. Standard Jewel lighting for 7 hours a day. I've got the bubble attachment on the filter and I've understocked.

Looking closely at the body their are red patches under the white areas. I suspected bacteria all along but I've never had any success with antibacterials. At least he was in a tank on his own when he died.
