Hi everyone, I would just like to say I am new here and your forum is great, friendly and full of information. I Just started up my new tank, about 4 Months ago now I am still loving the hobby apart from when I unsuspectly went to a fish hobbist club near my town. I had only a few guppies and platies in the tank a the time of going to the club, where you can pick up fish for dealers prices and recieve information, which at the time I thought was a good idea.
Anyway I came home with a couple of danios a female betta and a Asian upside down cat http
/www.planetcatfish.com/catelog/image.php?image_id=269 . All seemed fine for a couple of days while the fish where new in the tank, until the third day when some of my guppies started to go missing, I looked over the tank floor and found no evidence of the little fishes, I left it for a while and just assumed it was a fluke.
However my two platies died due to stress which could have been due to this monster I had lurking in my tank, at this time I was told that this catfish I had was a Euputus, which isnt as nearly as aggressive as the one I know I have now.
To cut a long story short all my danios where eaten, all my guppies, platies, and clown loach died with suspisious marks on his body.
Last night I went and bought some lovely guppies and now this morning two of them are missing, I looked onto your forums and found out I have mystus leucophasis a cat-fish that can be very predatory and eat things bigger than itself, which would explain why I havent had any trace of bodies. mystus leucophasis killed 6 neon tetras in 2 days!
I must admit it is a beatiful cat fish, but i was wrongly sold this fish in thinking it would make a good community fish. How wrong can you get! I just wish people who sell fish of these nature know what they are before passing the "bag" then I would not have lost either all my lovely live bearers and danios and nearly 30 quids worth of fish!!!
I have called all the fish shops in my area and no one will take him, I cannot let him sit in the tank another night otherwise my other guppies will be dead, he is sitting in a bucket in my kitchen, and believe me I feel so bad to do it to him because its his nature but not that bad to let him rip through my fish.
Just to let everyone know, when buying a fish like this that is not common, always be certain what your taking home. Anyone else had any experiances of this?
