Hi everyone, I would just like to say I am new here and your forum is great, friendly and full of information. I Just started up my new tank, about 4 Months ago now I am still loving the hobby apart from when I unsuspectly went to a fish hobbist club near my town. I had only a few guppies and platies in the tank a the time of going to the club, where you can pick up fish for dealers prices and recieve information, which at the time I thought was a good idea.

Anyway I came home with a couple of danios a female betta and a Asian upside down cat http://www.planetcatfish.com/catelog/image.php?image_id=269 . All seemed fine for a couple of days while the fish where new in the tank, until the third day when some of my guppies started to go missing, I looked over the tank floor and found no evidence of the little fishes, I left it for a while and just assumed it was a fluke.

However my two platies died due to stress which could have been due to this monster I had lurking in my tank, at this time I was told that this catfish I had was a Euputus, which isnt as nearly as aggressive as the one I know I have now.

To cut a long story short all my danios where eaten, all my guppies, platies, and clown loach died with suspisious marks on his body.

Last night I went and bought some lovely guppies and now this morning two of them are missing, I looked onto your forums and found out I have mystus leucophasis a cat-fish that can be very predatory and eat things bigger than itself, which would explain why I havent had any trace of bodies. mystus leucophasis killed 6 neon tetras in 2 days!

I must admit it is a beatiful cat fish, but i was wrongly sold this fish in thinking it would make a good community fish. How wrong can you get! I just wish people who sell fish of these nature know what they are before passing the "bag" then I would not have lost either all my lovely live bearers and danios and nearly 30 quids worth of fish!!!

I have called all the fish shops in my area and no one will take him, I cannot let him sit in the tank another night otherwise my other guppies will be dead, he is sitting in a bucket in my kitchen, and believe me I feel so bad to do it to him because its his nature but not that bad to let him rip through my fish.

Just to let everyone know, when buying a fish like this that is not common, always be certain what your taking home. Anyone else had any experiances of this?

Welcome to the forum :)
i have heard of this lots of time, buyer beware, always research your fish before buying. sorry you have found out the hard way :(

Hi Kewskills, yes its a shame it has came down to this, but from now on Ill be checking up on sellers usual species! Hopefully my guppies will be able to live for more than a few hours now.

Dont feel too bad, this happens to alot of people, its a learning experience, hope you have success and joy with your future fish keeping. :)

I am just a bit concerned if leaving him to pass in the bucket is the most humane way of doing it, I wouldnt want anything to suffer, I just feel I have no choice.

offer him a new home on the buy/sell/swap part of this forum, somebody near you may be able to home him, also is there not a way to divide you tank until he can be rehomed. if you cannot get rid then better to kill him quick than let him suffer and slowly die :(

awww what a shame, i'm so sorry for your loss

he is a lovely catfish but definately not suitable for your tank, however there are a few monster catfish keepers on this forum who may be able to provide him with a good home, or you can try calling any local public aquariums who may take him.

in the mean time put him back in the tank but divide it, just need a sheet of plastic or something like that, put pin prick holes in it to allow for circulation of water between the two ends

Thanks Miss Wiggle, Just been down to my local fish shops, I live in a small town so I dont have much choice. They dont have a divider and unfortunatly cant get one until Thursday which then I may be able to take him back to the fish club i got him from. I am going to have to keep him in the bucket and keep topping up the water, got him in a warm place so hopefully he will make it until Thursday. Dont know what else to do apart from let him back him and risk getting my other fish killed.

Anyway Thanks for the welcome and all your help ! :)
