Can anyone she any light on this please?

I have had 2 Mickey Mouse platies (albino colouring) for a week now and they seem to be doing just fine. 1 male, 1 female. Both have been eating, swimming, etc with no problems.

Last night the female was looking very listless and hanging near the surface. this morning she is dead on the bottom of the tank and now the male is looking listless. :( I've netted her out and she doesn't look like there is anything wrong with her.

When I bought her the shop told me that she was heavily pregnant and showed me the dark patch at the back of her tummy. I've read loads of posts on this forum on the subject and wasnt expecting her to keep them due to the stress of being bought/moved but as I say she has seemed fine.

The grim bit is :-( that when I was inspecting her in the net when she was dead I gave her a squeeze to see if she really was pregnant (and to see what they looked like) as I am new to all this. Her poor belly burst  and out came a load of fry.

My question is has something gone wrong withthe pregnancy to cause her death? All water parameters are normal (tested straight after hooking her out) and there has been no incidents of any kind to upset her.

Please help. :( :(

hiya cavafish ...am sorry to hear about your platie :(

I have guppies and have found that sometimes the females just do die before they give birth....it's nothing that you've done wrong - it just happens.

Just have a really close look at the male platie and make sure he doesn't have any specks or spots though will you. Since they have only been in the tank for a week it just may have something to do with the move which can bring on one of the stress related things like ich .

good luck with the male and let us know how you get on

so did the fry live? Were they alive ? ..........*crosses fingers for you*

Fry weren't moving so assumed them to be dead. mother fish could have been dead all night for all I know. Didn't put them back into tank incase they were ok as thought this was very remote and didn't want to contaminate the tank further with whatever the mother had died of if this was the case. Also didn't want to watch them be food for other fish (especially if diseased). :(

My other m.m. female platie seems fine and by the size of her is pregnant too. I think this has happened since I've had them so I will watch closely............... :)
