Has anyone had a pair of these fish, if so i would like to know some good info on them since i am thinking of getting 4, do they breed much or hard to determine their sex.

Thanks Aussie :D

I'v never heard of the name 'Rusty cichlid' before, do you have a scientific name for them?

Ummm it is Iodotropheus sprengerae doggfather does that help?

Iodotropheus sprengerae is an african cichlids coming from lake malawi

HTH

i moved this to the african.

iodotropheus sprengerae, common name rusty cichlid, is an african. it is a more peaceful african. it requires a more alkaline water, 7.4 - 8.4. it is a mouthbrooder. there is no color morph between the sexes, so venting the fish is the only accurate way of sexing. it is a very pretty fish imo.

what else are you thinking of putting in with it and what size tank?

I am thinking of putting in 4 yellow labs and 5 minagino's, in a 85 gal tank. Could i add more.

when you say mangaino are you talking about johanni's? you could put more species in this tank. what did you have in mind?

I had a couple of these little chaps* years ago - nice little fellas, nobody picked on them (they are not blue!) and they never started any trouble. No idea if I had a pair but they certainly didn't breed.

I put 5 Rusty's in my 135 gal tank. they ranged in size from about 1 1/4 to 1 1/2". Within about 4 weeks a female was already carrying eggs. Unfortunately none survived...not sure if she released them and they were eaten or if she swolled them. They are very docile. Other tank mates are Socofoli, Blue Ice, Kenyi, Demonsani, a pair of johanni's and some cobalt blue's.
