Rummynose Tetra

Hey guys


I bought a group of 6 of these on Friday. The lfs said 6 was a good number of these for a group. After they were bagged I noticed one of them was upside down and struggling to swim, I assumed he was just stuned and stressed. A few hours after I got home that fish died. That leaves me with a group of 5 ( all of which seem perfectly healthy/happy) am I ok with 5 or should I go and buy another to bring it back to a group of 6?

2 guppys and 2 plattys, nothing that will bother them. All i am concerned about is the size of the tetra group

well if the tank is big enough you could add 3 or 4 more, my only concern is that if you add only 1 new one on its own then the rest of the shoal will pick on it.

well if the tank is big enough you could add 3 or 4 more, my only concern is that if you add only 1 new one on its own then the rest of the shoal will pick on it.

To be honest I don't really want more than 6, it's not a particularly giant tank and getting 9 would mean I probably shouldn't get the 7 corys I wanted. I might just see how the group of 5 works out then if a 6th get picked on.

yeah you can get 1 more, fine. ive never heard of new fish of the same species getting picked on when added in small numbers before

I got a new one today, he immediately joined the group just fine . Sadly one of the other ones seems to have got into a fight with the others he has a bit of his back fin missing and is just hanging out by the filter rather than swimming around with the others. Poor little guy he will be fine soon though its only a small wound, probably fighting with another male.

I have 9 rummies and they don't fight! They are one of the most peaceful fish! Could he have been injured by one of the platies? They can become a little rowdy in my opinion. Usually to their own kind though!

How long is your tank? How many gallon/liters? Adding 6 new fish is a lot for a filter to handle. You do have a cycled filter/tank, right? I would keep an eye on any ammonia spike that could happen with adding more than 2-3 new fish to a tank!!! Have you checked your nitrate levels? They may rise faster now too with the addition of 6 new fish.

Also keep an eye on that wound, it is really important that your water is kept pristine to help it heal.

To be honest in the five days I have had them I haven't even seen the plattys go anywhere near them once they completely ignore them. Tank levels are fine and the fish seem happy enough apart from the one guy who seems to have gotten in a fight with someone.
