Hi all

Have just ordered a group of 5 ruby nerite snails from thesnailshop - do you need to acclimatise snails? and if so, is it the same as with fish?

Me and the kids can't wait until they arrive - OH not so sure! He remembers all the "pest" snails that arrived when I got plants

many thanks saltynay

so just to check - lights off, float bag to match temp & then slowly add water as for fish but for 2 hours minimum?

never bought (voluntarily!) snails before so pretty excited and want to make sure i get it right!

Yeah thats right. I usually put mine in for an hour and a half as normall for fish with a gradual water changes seal the bag back up and cut a corner of to leave a hole (2x2 cm) toward the bottom of the bag and allow it to continue floating allowing them to escpae when they want :good:

Thanks for all your help - you've been brilliant!

One last Q (promise!) - I don't have a quarantine tank so would I be better netting them out of the bag rather than cutting it & letting the water they come in into my tank?

They should be here tomorrow morning, can't wait :hyper:

Pick them up with your fingers just don't squeeze too hard, its how my LFS always gives me mine from the show tank and never had an issue. Personally I wouldn't be that pedantic about it as the snails are going to have a small residue from the water so any nasties in the water are going in no matter what.

lol that cracks me up...

You have to acclimatise snails you buy but the ones that get put straight into the tank from plants thrive!

Crazy! :hyper:

-- Good point, won't worry about it. Many thanks for all your help!

Well they've arrived and they're gorgeous :hyper:

They were packed in a pot and are floating in the pot in a sandwich bag at the moment.

How big are they?I ordered some from the snail shop and I am looking forward to getting them.

2 are about 1/2", 2 are a bit smaller than that and one tiddler!

Impressed with the snail shop, only ordered them on sunday. Watch out for the the torn up newspaper around the pot, I was a bit keen & it's all over the floor

Wait until you see them eating through algae I have 5 tiger ones but I love the Rubys.

Funny little things - hardly seem to move, look away for a couple of mins & they've gone! We've got a new game - hunt the snails

They're gorgeous, so glad I got them. Algae eating is just a (much-needed!) bonus
