In about a month I'll be getting a bigger tank, freeing up a 10 gallon for use. I want to put a small group of small fish into the ten gallon, but I'm not sure what would be better, and would like opinions (I like to plan ahead :p ) So, in your opinions, which would be better for a tank of that size, and how many? Rosy Red Minnows or White Clouds? Or something else, like tetras?

white clouds are smaller than rosys so you could get 6 or 7 but they dont get that much swimming room.

I pesonally vote for rosie reds. Their behavior is much more interesting than white clouds IMO. Most interesting "feeder fish" on the market.

Maybe I should have made a poll :p lol. What about Serpae or Rummy Nose tetras? Would those be better? I know rosies are a little bigger, but I saw some at the LFS today and fell lin love, and probably would've gotten some if there weren't at least 4 dead ones at the bottom of the tank (and if I'd had the room, which I don't ATM)

I'd never put rosies in a 10 gallon - realy too small for them and they should be in groups.

White clouds are nice (keep in mind that these and the rosies are not tropicals). They have the added benefit of being very hardy and easy to breed.

Serpaes and rummies both need to be in groups. The 'rummies' will be smaller and therefore are better suited to a 10 gallon. Mind you, I'm going with the preassumption that the 'rummy noses' you see at most LFSs aren't rummies at all (true rummies, Hemigrammus rhodostomus grow to 2" whereas the flameheads that most LFSs sell grow to 1.5"). If, however, your LFS actualy sells rummies, you'd be better off with the tetras since they are less active.

Note that the 'rummy noses' usualy sold at LFSs are Hemigrammus bleheri. Look them up and make shure you can identify them. there are, in fact, 3 species sold udner the 'rummy' name. The true one is the only one with yellow in its tail. Both of the other two remain slightly smaller (max. 1.5").

If you were to ask me, I'd get spiketailed paradisefish (Pseudosphromenus dayi) :p and maybe some pygmy cories and a small school of myer's hatchetfish.

What about xray tetras? How are they?

I've read different things about Kuhlii Loaches, and now I'm interested. I've read that they can be ketp in as small as 5 gallon, as long as they are by themselves (not that I would do this), but I've also heard 20 gallons is a minimum. Would they be okay in a 10 gallon with the small group of fish, or would they be better off in a 20 gallon, while I leave my cories in the 10?

Oh, and I'll look into the paradise fish :D My mom has taken a strong liking to the xray tetras, so that's why I ask about them. And as for what my LFS carries, I'm not sure on the line of tetras. The only thing I've looked for in there, is guppies and cories.

And thanks :p

Kuhlies grow to 4", though they are skinny, and I wouldn't keep them in a 5 gallon - probably not even in a 10. If you want some, why not put them in the 20 along with the cories? They'll get along fine. Cories aren't realy the best option for 10 gallons either because they are so active and grow to a good 2-3" (though it depends on teh species) - that's why I mentioned pygmy cories in particular before - they'd work fine in a 10 gallon because of their smaller size.

X-ray (aka pristella) tetras are similar to the serpaes we were discussing earlier - only pristellas don't nip whereas serpaes often do. Having said that they are similar, pristellas stay around 1" so are better suited to the 10 gallon and may be your best option if you want tetras.

thank you :D you've helped a lot. Would 3 Khulies and about 4 cories be okay in a 20 gallon? The only other fish that will be in there are guppies. I'll have to drag my mom along to the LFS to see what tetras they carry, and see if the rosies are any better than they were when I went in yesterday.

And as for cories for the 10 gallon, I'll also check for the pygmy variety :D
