OK bought some root tabs on-line came with instructions how to use but how long do they last before they need replacing ??

This will take some experimenting as there is so many factors. Heavy root feeders like swords will deplete those tabs faster than other plants. A larger plant will take more nutrients.

Add the tabs, plants should do well. Over the next 2 months or so if the plants start to look like they are dying down a bit, throw some more tabs in. If they don't get better than there is another factor such as light that is the problem.

Find out what works for you and roll with it.

My tank is almost all swords so I put them in once every 2 weeks. Actually have to do that today!

Can depend on the tabs. I got TNC plugs which can go 6 months before replacing

What brand of root tabs do you have, some root tabs, the cheaper ones only last a few weeks and can release their content into the water column which can affect livestock, the better quality ones normally cost a little more but worth it as they last at least 1 month to 6 months, dependant on what plants you have.

I personally use Seachem Flourish Root Tabs and these generally last about 2 - 3 months before replacements are required in the substrate.

Other decent brands like TNC mentioned earlier varies but can last anything from 3 - 6 months is the idea.

Swords are nice but remember they do grow pretty big and they can last for years under optimum conditions. Not suited for the smaller tanks imho.
