So I got six root tabs, and I have like way more than six plants in one of my tanks. So, I was thinking, could I not just put one root tab in the filter, while having the others under the plant; would this provide nutrients to the whole tank? Or do I NEED to have these root tabs under the plants in order for them to have any affect?

Thanks guys!

I think a problem you might encounter is that they'll dissolve pretty fast when exposed to the water column that way so it's not a longer term solution like root tabs in the substrate are. Some cloudiness might ensue too.

They don't need to be directly under the plants anyway. The nutrients diffuse some distance within the substrate, and plant roots can cover a pretty large area (the root system of my big Echinodorus bleheri goes through the entire substrate of the 55g tank).

Okay,thanks!

These root tabs are sticks. The sticks are a plastic tube with holes in them, and within the tube is the ferts. Is says these nutrients will diffuse into the water for about one(1) year. After which time they should be replaced. Would this change anything?

No idea TBH.

But then, if it dissolves slowly, the effect on the nutrient levels in the water column might be minimal. They're meant to provide a localized high concentration of nutrients accessible to the plants, and diluting them in the water column over a period of time might render the effect insignificant.

I would certainly try it if I were in your position, just because I'm always experimenting with such things. :)

Okay, thanks!

My friend uses the same tabs I have, and so far his plants are doing really well! So I hope mine do as well!

Thanks!
