Once your tank lights are off for the night do you keep the room lights off too.

i go nuts if someone switches the room lights on if the tank lights are off. am i being a nutter? :S

Hi, I'm exactly the same. In the morning I turn on the room lights and then the tank. At nightime I turn off the tank lights and then the room lights. When I am away in the summer they have natural daylight then the lights come on by timer and then in the evening the timer goes off then it gets dark outside. Sounds a bit fussy but I think it startles them to go from complete dark to light. :)

I don't really bother with it because if I go out I usually leave the tank lights on but turn the room light off or have the room lights on but the tank lights off and every morning it is usually pitch black but I turn the room light on and it never seems to bother the fish at all. So I wouldn't worry about it.

They do get startled if the lights suddenly go on, I have seen them get very jumpy. Don't suppose it does them any real harm. :)

My lights are on timers, so in the morning one light comes on for an hour, then the other one comes on.
Then at night the moonlights come on just as the main lighting goes off.

Tho the fish don't get too phased, lights to them just seem to mean food :)

I do things a little differently...

I work 2 jobs and am rarely home. So my fish sleep during the day and I turn there lights on at night while I am home and sleeping.

In my case I don't have to worry about daylight as they are kept in my bedroom which is in a basement, with no windows.

Its not something Ive given much thought to but I reckon fish in the wild get scares loads of times each day without doing them much harm.Call me a heartless B but if the room light needs to be turned on,its turned on.
Im not going to risk tripping and breaking my neck in the dark just to save a guppy from having palpatations :D
Anyway, like JDS, mine think its dinnertime the minute the lights are turned on.
