It is recommended that hydrocholoric acid be used when performing an acid test on rocks in order to determine whether they are usable in an aquarium. The problem is I have no Idea where to get hydrocholoric acid. If anyone knows where it is available, let me know. Also, I was at the hardware store and thought that muriatic acid might be useable because it was metioned synonymously with hydrocholoric acid in the AFM article on rocks. Does anyone know if it is ok to use muriatic acid to perform an acid test?

The type of acid is unimportant (as long as it is reasonably strong).

Muriatic Acid is just a lower molar concentration of Hydrochloric Acid. So they are the same thing but the Muriatic is of a much lesser concentration. They are both HCl.

But there are other chemicals in muriatic acid besides the HCl. I was worried the other substances may be bad to use in the test.

In the Aquarium Pharmaceuticals Nitrate test, the first bottle is HCl as well. I cannot speak for the other nitrate tests, but I would bet most of the rest (two-bottle tests) are similar.
