To my husbands embarrassment, I came back to the car in a store parking lot today with an armload of great looking rocks I found today. I couldn't help it. Only now that I have them, what do I do? How so I know if they are safe to use? I know NOT to boil them.

Boil some water and scrub them down with the boiling water (no soap) and of course let them cool before putting them in the tank :) This is what I did and my rocks are fine.

Is there any way to tell if they are ok for the tank...I mean...can I just dump any old rock in? :p

psssstttt??? anyone? echo?

haha Is there some way to know if the rocks I have are safe....could I soak them and test the water for changes or is there some way to just know?

drop some vinegar on them, if it fizzes, they arent safe to put in your tank, if it stays the same, that means it is inert and safe for your tank :)

FANTASTIC!!! Can't believe how fun it is to read about rocks! {That sounded so sarcastic but I was 100% serious} Thanks for the help, that thread really helped a lot. I finally identified my collection.

And if a rock does fizz, it will probably be okay for cichlids. generally a rock fizzing indicates calcium in the rock, which will raise the pH. Limestone fizzes, but I have limestone rock in my malawi tank to keep the pH up. Malawis thrive when the pH is around 8.2
