After setting up one aquarium and most of another and pretty much skint.

the next thing i need for my cichlid tank is the rocks for the caves and tunnels.

does anyone kno which rocks i can use from outside and in the river??

i live in the yorkshire dales so theres billions and billions of rocks, there must be some i can use?

ive seen the rock thread but i dont kno what types of rocks there are outside to compare them.

and sandstone is kinda confusing. it says not suitable but then it says its used alot in aquariums or sumfin.....

thanx in advance!

River is probably not a good idea. Lot's of pollution. I don't know though, maybe if you boil them really well or bake them. Without knowing what kinds of rocks you've got around you it's hard to say what's safe. The general rule on this is the fizz test. Been a long time since I've read about it. Do a search for +fizz +rock +test and see what you get. I know you put something on the rock and if it fizzes it's no good if not then you SHOULD be ok. Maybe someone else can tell you what acid your supposed to use. Sorry I can't remember.

Place the rock in vinigar, if it fizzez then it is not safe for your tank, if it does not then it "should be fine".

after doing the acid test (white vinegar is better than brown for this)
take a pic of the rock and post it, I'll do my best to id it for you.
I still have Tammy Paytons contact details at Franklin Institute Science Museum if all else fails.

I'll just reiterate be carefull when boiling rocks as they can retain their heat for a very long time.
