I just bought two plants the other day and I am now wondering if I have the right subdrate. I just have plain old aquarium gravel on the bottom, will the plants still grow? should I get some sand, or soil? should I be getting those fertilizing disks?

thanks, i'm really new to the planted aquarium thing, any help would be appreciated. :)

Yes the roots will still grow. Root tabs (discs) cant hurt, fertilisers are always a good idea when it comes to planted aquariums.
What plants have you bought?

a cambomba and a corkscrew vallisneria. these two just to begin with, i haven't found any good stores that sell HC, or java fern but I am hoping to find a place soon. my oto loves to munch on the corkscrew and the other fish have totally ignored the combomba. and what about co2 diffusers, should I look into getting one if I want to have more plants?

These plants imo will definately need a liquid trace fertilizer minimum. CO2 is a whole different ball game really. Check the link at the bottom titled Pressurized co2 equipment flow and fert.
Co2 is normally only considered if you want a very heavily planted aquarium, high light, or if you want to grow high tech plants OR if you just want a challenge! CO2 can be very rewarding.
Like i said, check my link and think about if this is the route you would like to take
