HI

whats the best rock to use for a tank with shell dwellers and cyps? my tap water is about 8.2ph so no problem there. river cobbles? ocean rock? slate??

thanks!

I dont keep shell dwellers and never have... but ive seen a thew set-ups and i think it dont matter about rock aslong as they have lots of big shells to dwell in. I may be wrong though....

If you choose to have rock, your water dosn't seem to need buffering so any rock that takes your fancy i guess.... :good:

Limestone and sandstone are the most commonly used due to their high calcium content. If you have naturally hard alkaline tap water then it shouldn't matter what sort of rock you use.

If the tank isn't set up yet I would advise doing a fishless cycle to get the filters running. This is due to the high PH of the water and any ammonia produced in this PH will be lethal to fish.

Agreed, and for shells the general consensus is to have 2 to 3 times as many shells as fish so they have a choice of homes. Most people use escargot shells found at gourmet markets or online (gourmet suppliers are the cheapest).

I used a few pieces of Tufa rock in my shelldweller set up and loads of shells!

For true shell dwellers and Cyps you dont really need any!

However if you fancy putting a few in for aesthetic purposes then I like the worn round boulders, river rocks. or some similar name...
