Hi, I have 3 questions for you all, hope you can help....

1 - I have a local store around the corner that sell lots of varieties of rocks, stones etc, can i put these into my fish tank as decorative items or will they harm the fish? there are all types of rocks there, are there only certain types that can be used?

2 - How many fish can i have in my 29 Gallon, 110 litre tank. currently I have 13 community fish and a plec in there, ranging from 1-3 inches Max.

3 - Lastly, my Lite-Glo Hood has a large piece out of it at the back, is there anywhere where i can get a 36 by 12 Hood that is similar to mine, mine has a nice curve to it.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, thank you.

Hello,
i will answer to the best of my knowledge!
1. People tend to go 2 different ways on this subject - "sure, no problem" or "absolutely not!!!" I'm more likely to say sure no problem, but I would recommended rinsing, cleaning, re-rinsing and also boiling these rocks. That should take away any nasties the rocks may be carrying.
2. The general - general, this is not a definite - rule of thumb on fish is 1" per gallon, so feasably you could have approximately 29 inches of fish in your tank. IF you could be more specific on what you have in there, that would be really helpful! Most importantly, what kind of plec do you have in there?? If it's a common you will probably have to re-home. If you could get back with the exact species of fish you have, we can help you out more on if you can add more fish or not.
3. I would check around all of your LFS - makes some calls to some a little further away if you don't want to do the drive. Where are you located? You can try some on-line sites as well.
Hope this helps and wait for a few other responses, but try to answer my questions to help everyone help you! :D

1. This article is useful. http://www.fishforums.net/index.php?showtopic=55806 You must be careful, as the wrong types of rock can alter your water chemistry which will stress or kill fish.

2. 1" of fish per US gallon is the best guide. Go over this by too much and you are pretty much guaranteed to get problems. Look up all your fishes' eventual adult size. Add all of their lengths up. If you've got more than 29" then your likely to have problems. The plec is your most likely source of trouble depending on what species it is. Some get up to a foot long, aggressive and terratorial once theyre fully grown although the look very sweet when theyre young.

3. Clueless.

:good:
