Rock Weight

Hi there,

I'm going to be getting another 25kg of coral rock to add to the curent 25kg that is already in the tank. I'm worried as to the weight on the bottom of the tank. The Juwel manual online says that reinforcement is not needed.

The JUWEL Aquarium is built with a special bottom frame for security. The
aquarium should be placed directly onto the cabinet. DO NOT place any additional
support, e.g. polystyrene, under the aquarium since this is not necessary with our
aquariums.

385

Tank is a Juwel Rio 300.

Am I worrying over nothing?

It does and it doesn't.

You can't just watch and think yours will hold that weight. There are a couple of other factors in this.
1. That is a smaller aquarium
2. That's made from toughened glass.

This came up a while back and I did the maths from that vid, came to the conclusion that standard glass tanks that size will withstand 3 times the weight of the water they will take.

Now it gets harder when the aquarium gets bigger since distance of weight from edge starts playing a role. But they also start making the bottom thicker.

So in stead of triple, allow a little for manufacturing defects (may be a slightly weak piece of glass) etc, and go with double.


Oh, and just to confuse things even more, you may have added 25kg of rock, but you haven't added that much weight to the aquarium, dependant on their size, they displace water, so you're already removing weight to add that weight in.
