hello people, im in such a dilemma. im getting a nano setup for christmas, and dont want to start until i have everything needed, however i believe i need RO water, and i dont understand how these sysstems work and how big they are, and ive heard the units are rather expensive. can anybody please recommend a unit suitable for small aquaria? i wont be needing much and it will be going in my bedroom. any cheap options out there? dont want to sound like a cheap skate but i really dont have that much money, and also, is it possible to buy RO? if so how much a gallon? please answer asap

Summat fishy :)

well i brought my unit for £50 from my lfs but it was a special offer. however if i was you ide check out www.ro-man.com they have some very gd priced complete units on there from around £60 which give about 50 gallons per day. Make sure if u do buy one you get a tds meter aswell to know that your water is pure and not letting anything through.

the system i have has got 3 filter chambers first is a sedement filter second is a carbon filter and third is the filter membrain and yesterday i added a DI resin filter that filters the water again after it comes out the filter membrain and the results are that i have 0ppm of contaminants in the water which is perfect.

My setup is 350mm tall and 250mm wide and that being generous they are not big at all. My steup come with a special fitting that fits on the bottom of a cold tap and then u have a valve u fit into the side of that so you can turn the filter off when your not using it.

You can buy RO water for about 50p per gallon....but it depends where u get it from as all prices vary depending on what the shop feels like charging. In the long run its better to buy yourself a RO filter as u have it readily available at home and dont have to travel to get water.

i buy mine from LFS it is 90p a liter then 50p extra if you want chemicals to balance the ph etc. its not a extra 50p per liter though just 50p no matter how many liters.

to be honest ro water is a scam to make money tap water is perfectly fine as i used this method at the place i work and i have always used tap water just to be sure to add a stress zyme of some sort :good:

i used tap water too to fill my entire tank, i just do 10% water change twice a month with tap water.. after it distilled a bit, and 10% water change twice a month using RO water. so every week i do a water change, every other week i use RO water

Um, no. For one thing all tap water isn't the same, just because yours didnt introduce excess nutrients and/or toxins doesn't mean to units are a scam to make money. Thais like saying that there's no need to acclimate them either, just because your fish didnt die and only suffered a minimal amount. RO water is a very important step of prevention, if you know anything about marine aquaria then you know that prevention is a lot more important and a lot easier than treatment. Dont start start digging holes for others simply because the walls of your own have yet to topple in on you. I respect that you dont use an to unit but dont go around making statements like that.

I totally disagree

RO water is very important

Well, depends on what the goals he has for his tank? FO? FOWLR? Reef?

fish food is a scam, if you have enough live rock you dont need to feed fish at all

Thats like saying that, things that are wrong with this is that it didnt say how much live rock, it didnt say why they didnt need to be fed, it didnt give more info, it didnt include variables, and its more of a risk, not a "just in case". Sure it works for some, but not everyone. Some people may have very clean tap water with low nitrates, low phosphates, no detectable copper, low heavy metal content, others may have the exact opposite.

Saying RO water is a scam, i mean come on, its not like RO water was made for fish tanks, its not like metal halide lamps were made for fish tanks. If you are going to call it a scam, call it a scam in every criteria it is used in, but make sure you do your research before you add your input in.

And may i ask, how is stress zyme going to help? What on earth does it possible do?

to be honest even if you took the opinion with RO water being a scam why take a chance i pay 50p per 5 litres from my LFS which lets be honest is peanuts considering what we pay fro anything in our aqyuariums, and as stated before every area has different tap water qualities, where I live you would be chancing keeping most tropicals using tap water let alone marines.

Personally i would rather be over cautious and not take any chances as prevention is better than cure, and would agree with Musho what ever you put in your water is not going to remove impurities its only likely to add to them.

See, this is what happens when you try to tell a group of people that they've wasted their $100-200 :D

I'm sorry but that statement is just wrong. Any functioning TDS Meter will tell you so.

OK IMO it is necessary

Try http://www.ro-man.com/ for excellent RO units and brilliant customer service

I would get one with a built in TDS meter or buy a TDS meter

As to the rant it wasn't that bad :) - just strongly disagreeing that RO water is a scam
