Ok.

I'm seriously considering using RO water in my tank instead of normal tap water...

what are you thoughts on this? Do you think it is worth it? what are the benefits of it, and what are the negatives...

all comments are much appreciated and encouraged to either win me into getting a system, or enlightening me to the fact that it is a waste of money...

RO units are excellent for both freshwater and marine systems. No Marine aquarist should be without one. As for freshwater, as Truck points out its no good without adding ingredients back to it such as RO Right or similar product. Discus breeders would use RO all the time.

positives: gives you pure water enabling you to make perfect soft water for fish like discus, clean pollution free water for marines.

negatives: cost, initial cost also replacement filter parts. If you use a pump with it that will use electricity. Also there is a waste water issue with RO units. My unit makes about one part RO 4/5 parts waste.
