i've had my mbuna tank going for about 6 months now with no issues. i also have a small marine tank so always have RO water to hand.

some info first

125lt tank
filter xp3 (rated at 600ltr)
8 mbuna (all about 2")
ph 7.8
gh i think was about 11 (i could be completely wrong)
kh was about 5 (i could be completely wrong)

my nitrate before using RO would be about 5ppm before a water change, i'd do 30ltr every week using just tap water.

about 3 weeks ago i decided i'd try RO for a while and see how it goes.

my first RO water change was 15ltr on the 20th and my nitrates have read 0 every since, last night i did another 15ltr RO water change.

each time i have used jbl cichlid salts, my stats in terms of ph etc have not changed at.

so this brings me to my question, how long would you leave a water change if nitrates remain at zero. over time minerals in the water will degrade so i assume water changes still need to be done, its just a case of how often.

cheers

Unless you are using some sort of resin, or other product to remove the nitrates, there should be some hint of it.

I would do a water change at least once a week.
When you do a wc, you are not only removing the nitrates, but there are other chemicals, hormones etc that the fish put into the water that need to come out.

Also, when you remove the water, you should be hoovering the substrate to get rid of as much poop as possible.

i thought as much, i'll just keep up my 15ltr a week. keeps it nice and simple.

thanks
