I've bough an RO unit for my nano reef that I'm going to set up and as I've paid the money and my tap water isn't great, I think I'll use it for my FW community as well.

My plan is to use half / half tap water / RO water and was wondering if anyone could recommend a good additive to use, or whether I'd need to add anything considering I have very hard water from the tap, am using EI fertilisation and dose micro, trace and iron suppliments.

Any info would be appreciated.

It really depends on your tap water, but with most FW tanks you shouldnt need to add anything much. Fertilizer will obviously help your plants but only add other additives if you know what else is currently in your tap water.

I really cant see the point of mixing R/O with tapwater, you have lovely pure water with all the harmfull crap filtered out and then you go and add it all back. When i used R/O in the past i used KENT R/O right and KENT pH stable to re mineralise and stabilise it, a small pot of each cost around a fiver and would last 6 months or so.

The point being that it would have HALF the crap in it, although I see what you mean... Will have a look at those additives.

Cheers for the info.

Hi. I do the same thing as you are thinking about doing. Mixing tap with RO at 50/50. My water is quite hard and after i mix it with the RO water it brings the KH to about 4 or 5, and the GH around 12 or 13. I don't add any other additives. I thought about using only RO water with the additives but i don't have an RO machine, i just go and buy it from a place that does at 20 cents a litre. So to keep the cost down i came up with the mixing idea. Also, i can't find Kent RO right around here so that was another factor, and an additional cost. I have had good luck so far.
