i dont see why it wouldnt if you well rinse it.

but i brought back a couple bags of sand from the lake i live by and it was very beautiful and white until i rinsed it. it wouldnt rinse and was constantly murky so i threw it out

go with pay sand, because its illegal to nick sand from rivers or silver sand

I have paving sand in mine. It's 'dirt cheap' and looks natural.

Just add the same weight (kg) of sand that you were going to add as gravel..

and should I add any additives to the substrate to make it more nutrient infused?

you could put a layer of tropica plant substrate underneath it, about 1 cm

in my new aquarium i have play sand...around 1-2 inches deep and that is planted...i use liquid plant ''food'' is there anything else i should be doing? nutrient tablets?
