Hi everybody,

I found this fish in a large river in west Cameroun. The largest specimen I've seen is around 15 - 20 cms long.

Anybody has an idea of what it can be? Here are the pictures

It appears to be a Cyprinid of some form but as to its identity i haven't got a clue, nice looking fish though

Wrong continent so its not a Chalceus

I agree CFC; a very nice fish. NOt only the colouring, but also the scaling is very nice I think, with the black accent around each scale.

Any other suggestions than a cyprinid? I will try to take it from there if possible.

I'm thinking a silverside, (possibly Alestes dentex but that is only a vague memory of
the description about the yellow tailfin, as I can find no pictures to confirm that)

Thanks for the replies. I tried a search on cyprinid and Central Africa, but no luck there. I see from Wolf's reply that he tried the same for silverside already.

The problem is that people here are only interested in edible fish, so not much knowledge is available on fish that do not show up on the daily menu.

However, I will try to ask around here.

The tail fin shows ressemblance with the fish in the picture, but the fish is not as full-bodied as in this picture. It is longer, and more slender. Plus I find the black lining of the scales very characteristic for the fish I saw. I do think it must be aknown fish as it was so abundant, but you never know; maybe it is a premiere!
