Hi,

I have a danio that I noticed today lost all of her color and is slightly pineconing. My water stats are all normal and I did a water change yesterday. I know that recovery from dropsy is not likely, my worry is if she will infect my other fish if I leave her in there, or should I euthanize now. She looks uncomfortable but I hate euthanizing....... Anyone have any thoughts ?

If scales are sticking out it organ failure very rare they survive.
You could issolate the fish at the top of the tank in a container.
Dropsy can pass on if your fish peck at the dead body.
Bacteria can enter a tank through wounds as well.

Epson salt baths help draw the fluids out.
If she in discomfort it might be better to end her misery,

Dropsy isn't very "infectious" as long as;
a. The fish with dropsy doesn't die in the tank (however most fish with dropsy do die unfortunately, its quite a difficult condition to treat in fish since it is basic general kidney failure and can be caused by numerous things, from bad or unsuitable water quality conditions, rapid large fluctuations in temp, internal infections, internal cancer or tumors etc etc), the most common way for dropsy to spread between fish is for fish to scavenge/nibble at the dead infected fishes body, a lot of fish (even primarily herbivorous ones) will eat the carcasses of dead fish.
b. If the fish's dropsy was caused by certain conditions in the tank, then those same conditions could cause more fish to get dropsy if the conditions are still present.

Thanks for the advice, I need to figure out what the root problem is then. I suppose it may be internal paracites since there are no other symptoms except one of my platies fins are beginning to clamp.

As for the fish, I scooped her out of the water this morning and noticed 3 large bites on her and decided to euthanize her. I think the danios can sense when one of their own is sick and they go after that fish to get them out of the pack. Very sad !! She was my longest living danio +1 year

RIP silver danio !

Thanks again
