Hey, I recently set up a new tank and am planning to fishless cycle although I havent started yet as I have struggled to find a source of ammonia. I tested the water the day after i set the tank up and the ammona level read 0.50 ppm, that was two days ago. I measured the level again today and it has rose to in between 1 and 2 ppm. i havent added anything to the tank and am just wondering what caused the rise? 
I've read a number of books which mention just leaving the tanks for a 36 day period without adding any ammonia to cycle it at all, so im a bit confused. All I have in the tank is bogwood and about 5 real plants, I'm using an API liquid test kit. Any help would be welcome. Thanks
