fish004.jpg

he was my favoret guppy i had i bread him as well now he is gone :-(

Awww, I'm so sorry you lost him. :rip: I'm sure he had a good life, though.

Off topic but...Since you bred him, I'm wondering what his parents looked like? He is gorgeous! :)

Sorry for your loss, how long did you have him.R.I.P.

wow, that is a cool guppy. :rip: little dude.wow, i actually cared, my friends usually call me the grim reaper.

Sorry for your loss, but were you by any chance keeping him a large or strongly filtered tank by any chance? Long tailed fancy guppys do not have enough strength in their long tails due to so much inbreeding in small tanks and their tails often split when the tank is too large or the filter flow is too strong and i see a tear on his tail which looks very much as a result of one of these 2, they often don't last long in these conditions.
You couldn't have known any better if this was so as many people don't know about these things with long tailed fancy guppys but if you want another long tailed fancy guppy you will have to keep him in conditions similar to a male betta to survive and prosper- small tank with no or very weak filtration and top notch water condtions with regular water changes(100% for unfiltered tank).
Many people have recorded that fry from these guppys if raised in normal tank conditions are often slightly stronger than the parent- some think this is due to the fry being able to exercise at a young age properly and so are a little stronger, but be careful for any deformitys or belly crawelers in the fry batch when they are born as guppys of this variation are so inbred these things are very common things to have in fry batchs.

wow, that info shoud be a stickie, most of us don't even think about that, at least not me

@guppy
Sorry for your loss, you didn't mention how it died btw

It could have been old age... Guppies, b/c of inbreeding, die after a year (less if you get them from wal-mart  ) and sometimes 2 years, if you've REALLY taken great care of them.

maaaan, thats a very short period of life

i no this is off topic but i just wonderd is it true that fish forget what they've done every second

Nope, your average fish have a memory span of 3 and a half hours but this varys alot of course- a neon tetra is more likely to have a memory span of 30mins, but a sailfin molly is more likely to have a 3-4hr one etc.
Also fish learn things after a while too even with their short memory spans- if they see a particular person alot like whoever feeds them they will be able to distinguish that person from from another :) , fish though can recognise each other far better than humans apart and guppys, platys, mollys and guppys have complicated social systems- a female guppy for example will be able to recognise which male was nicest to her while she was pregnant so she will mate with him when she is ready and not the male who picked on her the most, female guppys will also be able to remember which fish ate most of their fry and will also ignore males who get sick alot and avoid mating with them etc.

thats why my female guppy rainbow just ignores her best mate dory now

cause dory ate 1 of her babies

poor little fellow :rip:

i'd hate to keep forgetting things every now and again :/

well I don't know, but I do know this, I have "trained" my fish to know that when I gently tap my fingers on the tank it means that I will feed them. :p so I guess there's some type of long-term memory
