Can any tell me how I can find out the litres per hour from the standard filter that comes with the juwel mini system in my rio 180?

Cheers

thanks for that. I'm looking to improve on this as I want to set it up with cichlids. any advice/recomendations as to what to use with it? i was thinking of an exteral canister?

Me again.

I've got Vision 180's and removed the internal filters and replaced them with Eheim 2026's - they're expensive, but I've had no trouble with them on either tank (have Cichlids), and only need to do maintenance on them every 3-4 months or so if that.

Have a look/ask in the Hardware section of the forum as there are lots of externals out there and everyone's got a preferred one.

cool thanks kim...how hard is it to get the juwel filter out...and once its out can it go back in easily?

do i need to take it out to use an external filter (only ever used UG filters before)?

thanks

Andy

I def think what kim did is a great idea. Many people who own the "package" tanks that say they come with everything are usually underfiltered and underlit so most people replace both. If your not planting with live plants or doing salt then no need to worry about lighting upgrades. but it is def a good idea to do the filter upgrade as 600lph gives 3.3x turnover for the current filter. The recomendation for all tanks is atleast 4x turnover for adequate filtration but IMO, I always like to 5x to 6x turnover for extra filtration to keep the water as healthy as possible :good:

Hi Andy,

This is such a common question that Bloo (from this forum) wrote a great guide on the removal of it - you can find it here http://homepage.ntlworld.com/p.ebsworth/juwel.htm

I did mine before coming across this, so did it with the tank full of both water and fish (they kept well away...woman with a sharp implement, lol), and used kitchen knife to (carefully) saw through the silicone. I couldn't get all of the silicone off first time, but found that it pulled off easily after a couple of weeks in the tank water.

Would imagine that to put it back in you'd have to pretty much empty/dry the tank and silicone it back in (although I've read somewhere on here recently that there's a silicone you can use in water).

the guide makes it sound so easy. i'm goin to trawl ebay for a decent external filter then me thinks.....any other sites for decent 2nd hand fish stuff anyone can suggest as i'm on a budget.

also...when i bought my tank it came with a back ground (i think its juwels own one) siliconed onto the back. when i remove my filter i'll be left with an unsightly gap where the background is missing. i'm duboius of a silicone that can be used in water? any ideas?

ps your help is much appreciated

also, while i'm thinkin, ox5477 you mention changing the lighting. i know its all personal preferance but what do people suggest. will be for a cichlid set up with no plants. i've seen a few set ups that seem to have a bluish tinge to the lighting...is it moonlight lighting its called. looks good anyway, just looking for advice

I do not know where you are located, but I just bought a Marineland (alias Tetratec) canister filter C-220 for 99 USD including shipping, and all the media with Monsterpets via Ebay. I think that is a great deal.

Know that Interpet do a couple of different moonlight tubes - one's for marines, the other a general one I think.
