Introduction

So it begins, in the space of 6 months this will be my 3rd reef tank. Maybe this one ill let mature and grow out, or maybe not, who knows! Link to current tank thread, albeit not very updated:

Current Tank

The reason for the change is the problems I have had from the current tank. These were:

- Tank not being drilled and the hang on overflow box being a pain in the backside to use.
- Dont like the cube as I found it a hard shape to scape with and I dont want to change it now.
- Sump is awkward to get to and is hard to see the water level, therefore making it difficult to see if I need to top up.
- The fact that everyone likes a new tank! (Im still a big kid!)
- Hair algae is doing my head in, not too bad but im a perfectionist.
- Lost some SPS due to high nitrates, which is also causing the algae.

So the plan, same as before but better. I want it to be a mixed reef but may move on from softies, focus mainly on LPS and maybe a few SPS.

The Tank

After looking at several suppliers I was in a right mix. Found some amazing tanks with some great reputations for build quality but some were not easy on the pocket. After looking at the ND Aquatics website, I researched their customer service and build quality reputation and was happy. I then proceeded to e-mail them with my specs and after some very helpful e-mail and phone conversations I decided I would order with them. I decided on this:

24" x 18" x 18" (Length x Height x Width) Braceless/Rimless Marine Fish Tank:

- Tank Volume: 24 UK Gallon ( 110 Litre )
- 10mm all glass aquarium
- Polished edges
- 1 x Weir, right
- 3 Drilled holes, 1 Return, 2 Inlet
- Sump Tank 21"x18"x 13"
- Black silicone/Black Backing
- Cabinet, lugano oak, bar handles
- Front pane in Optiwhite™
- Comes with all the pipework needed

Not excactly the same but it shpuld look similiar to this

The tank is being delivered on the Tuesday 5th April (3 weeks) so that is when the real fun will begin, hopefully with lots of pics along the way. Just thought I best right all this down now or ill just forget!

Lighting

Ill be using the same lighting from my previous tank. I feel this will be adequate as it has supported my LPS well and the tank will be 4 inches shallower. Its an Eco-Lamp KR-91 in black (24 inches).

Lighting periods are:

12-2 Blues
2-10 White and Blues
10-11 Blues
11-12 Moonlight

Filtration

The water will be filtered through approx 12kg of live rock. The scape will probably be a bit different from the last one. I might go for a couple of little mounds or 1 long mound. Ill be running a deltec mce300 skimmer along with a TMC v600 reactor fluidising bio-pearls. Im also lighting cheato to help with my nitrate problems and will probably be running a filter sock on the inlet to the sump.

Sand

Ill be using TMC medium grain sand with this tank, I used some on the cube and im very happy with it.

Flow

Flow will come from 2 powerheads and the return pump. I am undecided on what im going to use yet but hope to get an Vortech MP10 for this tank as I think they rock. I will be aiming for about 30+x turnover.

Reverse Osmosis

I didn't have my own unit until a few days ago. I should have got one sooner but just didnt get round to it. The hassle of going to the shop everytime I needed water and the worry of quality made me go for it. I have a 4 stage 50 GPD osmotics.co.uk unit. Its got an inline tds meter and its currently running on the outlet at 0 tds. Ill be using Red Sea Coral Pro Salt agin too.

Auto top-up

I plan to get one for this tank just to make my life easier. I feel that stability has been a huge issue with the current tank and this should help to combat against this. I would like a tunze one but may have to settle for a cheaper aqua medic one. Unless, someone can reccommend me one?

Chemistry and Dosing

I will be trying to keep my SG stable at 1.026 at a temp of 26C. I will try to keep my parameters inline with my Salt levels. They are:

Ca - 450
Mg - 1340
KH - 12.2

I have got FM Balling Salts to use if any of my levels are being used up to quickly but feel that on a tank this size the 10% weekly water tank should be sufficient. I do not dose anything else in the tank other than salifert coral food (daily dose of 3ml).

Stocking Plan

As said above, sticking with LPS, maybe a few softies and SPS. Fish will be 2 common clowns, my zebra goby, 1 Carpenters Flasher Wrasee and maybe a Chalk Bass. I will have a cleaner shrimp, emerald crab, and the normal hermits and turbo snails.

Conclusion

I hope this tank will be more successful than my current one and also easier to run. I am finding the tank a chore to run at the moment, it just seems to take up too much of my time. I plan to get a few frags and hopefully be successful in growing them on as colonies. I love tanks with miminal equpiment and rock with loads of corals so we shall see what I achieve.

I will try to keep this thread updated unlike my last one and without all the spiel of this post. I hope you enjoy reading my plan and I am open to critism, ideas and feedback, cheers.

:good: very well planned. Sorry to hear of the current tanks issues but from the ashes rises new beginnings :D.

Not much to report on this tank. My current tank on the other hand is really getting on my t*ts. I come home tonight to find a few corals closed up, run some tests and my KH is down to 10.8, salt mix is 12.2 so I think some of my issues is with KH swings and it is quite possible that this is the reason why I have struggled with SPS. I will test in 2/3 days to see how much is being used up so I can make my calculations to start using my FM balling salts. Hopefully that'll help.

Hi, Ive tried my best to plan well in advance this time. The first tanks were just a kind 'go and see' type project but this one I have an idea in my head of how I want it to go. Yeah, learn from you mistakes and all that. Cheers.

That all looks very exciting, how much did the tank end up costing you?

Seffie x

Yeah it is, cant wait to get the tank. 2 weeks on Tuesday, yay!! The tank cost me £373.00 delivered with all the extras (braceless, optiwhite, extra hole drilled, pipework) Im hoping this tank can be something really special, time will tell.

Thanks for the comments.

Well the first of the new equipment turned up today. I recieved my aqua medic sp3000 auto-top up. I decided on the aqua medic one rather than the tunze one just on the basis of cost. The tunze one is a lot more expensive and they both do the same job so I thought it should be good. Overall pretty happy with it, I set it up today on the current tank just to make sure it is running okay. The perilistic pump does seem to be leaking, anyone have any help on this.

I also recieved my TMC marine sand so substrate is all sorted.

The tank comes a week today, hope its all okay. Im getting very excited about it now. Unfortunately the carpet has been put on delay so the tank might not be set up straight away!

the setting up is definately the best part isn;t it James

looks like a good set up, I like the light system

Havinga few problems with my reef myself it can get quite disheartening but they do look fab when running well

Hey mate, yeah setting up is definetely the best bit. Its the buying of all the equipment and having a plan in your head. Gets all exciting just as it starts to come together. Ive been really happy with the lights and I feel the unit will be even better on this tank with a more shallow depth.

Ive had a few problems with mine too mate. Maybe its just a case of looking at it differently. Have a goal of what you want to achieve long-term and understand the problems and solutions on how to achieve it. What you having issues with? Update your thread and maybe us guys can try and help you out.

Ive just bought another piece of equipment that was on my wish list. I just got a second hand vortech mp10 es, just waiting for it to arrive in the post. Ive wanted one since setting up a reef tank.

Due to recent events (see this thread) my current setup is now in a holding Vat. It was going to go in here for the change but it has happened a bit prematurely. Here are some pics:

On a good note, my mp10 has arrived. I absolutely love it, amazing flow and love the choice of modes and power settings.

That tempory tank looks great IMO I'd be happy with that! Lol

Very interesting so far mate. I bet you can't wait for the tank to arrive so you can make a start.

I'm excited for ya bud!

Will be keeping an eye on this one!

Ha, cheers mate. Its not too bad considering, its quite nice to look down at the fish and corals. It gives a different perspective on the tank, kinda gave me an idea of a look-down tank in the far future.

I cant wait for the tank, although it'll all be about the plumbing and hanging the plug sockets and making sure I have it all planned out. Still got to wait for a date for the carpet to be changed so as soon as I know that, its all go!!! :good:

Im hoping this tank will turn into the vision I have for it. Cheers for the comment.

I am very happy with the finish and I think the sizes I picked give the tank a nice shape, just my opinion though. Now I got to do the pipework, the fun bit! :shout:

I plan to run a twin standpipe like this:

Dual_Standpipe_design_1.jpg

The tank says not to fill until the 14/4/11 so it will be at least until then for the fill! Still waiting for the carpet to be done but that should be this week so its all coming together.

I have also bought a new eheim return pump and a second hand bubble magus skimmer for this tank. I could resist the buy, plus I have heard nothing but great reviews.

Here is the specs

Thats all for now, unless I have forgotten something. Will update again soon but any input/help is appreciated.

Cheers

Looking good! That tank is sweet, what did you need to shell out for it if you don't mind me prying?

Edit- don't worry I have just seen it above lol.

Thanks, im well happy with it. Looking at it like a kid in a sweet shop. Now I just cant wait to get it salty, im just going to have to wait.

Yeah, it was as above- £373.00 delivered which I thought was rather good with all my specs and extras, ie. optiwhite, extra hole.

Cheers

The carpet is being done next wednesday so as soon as that is done its all sytems go. I was hoping to get the day off to do the fill and changeover but wont have one until the follwing week so im not yet sure when it will happen.

I have done the pipework for inside the weir but have yet to weld it, just incase I wish to adjust the height of the return. Pics of this will follow.

I have been thinking about what stock I plan to keep. Im thinking:

-Pair of clowns with the BTA
-Black barred convict goby
-Carpenters flasher Wrasse

(These have all come from the old setup)

Anyone have any suggestions on what else I can have?

Cheers

Well I have done some more plumbing today. I have plumbed in the tank connectors but haven't silconed them in. I still dont know what is best method to install them. I have done tons of research lately on this and it seems very 50/50 on whether people use the washers or throw them away and use just silicone. What do you guys do? (please only answer if you have experience in this, not just from what you have heard/read, cheers)

Here are some pics:

DSCF1797.jpg

I wont be using that tap, I have an endcap coming in the post. I will just drill an anti-syphon hole in the top.

DSCF1804.jpg

Before I had done this I noticed a small crack by the middle hole in the weir.

DSCF1800.jpg

As you can imagine im not too pleased about this. I have e-mailed the tank makers but I am determined not to send the tank back. It isnt cracked all the way through, just seems like a small crack on the surface so im hoping to silicone the hell out of it in the hope it will be okay.

I went picked up the Bubble Magus skimmer from the post office today too, I have put it in the holding tub just to see how it is and to bed it in. Well, I plugged it in and was instantly impressed, especially for its size. I hope to gets some pics (maybe a vid) of it in action.

Any input is welcome.

Cheers
