I took my mum up to Wildwoods yesterday whilst browsing she pointed out a fish she had recently brought for her tanks, in Wildwoods they where called Lampeyes but the lfs my mum brought them from called them rice fish. I've tried to id them from a number of sources but i'm still not sure.
They are approximately 1cm with a transparant body, rather flatish head & fluresent blue eyes can any one help with the id? are they infact the same fish?

will try to get a photo if it would help.

I have Javenese Rice fish, which look like you describe. They are different to lampeyes. I bought them in Maidenhead aquatics and at the time they had both types of fish. They are quite interesting, they swim at the top of the tank. I was told to buy 6 because the schoal, they actually killed each other. I now have a pair who are very happy together. I don't think they are shoaling fish! :/

Here's a list of lampeyes - have a look and see which one yours look most like (you need to click on thumbnails for larger and more pics).

Your fish are the same as mine. They were marked as Jarvenese Rice fish when I bought them.
The female's eggs hang off them in a bunch like grapes!

Cheers Basia :good: Clear something up for me prehaps i'm being dim you mentioned yours killed each other was it lampeyes v rice fish or rice fish on rice fish violance?

My mum has 5 in with 6x each of Neon, Glowlight Tetra's & Harlequin Rasbora but there is no aggression what so ever they hang out with each other & will take their place in a shoal with the other fish when you approach the tank

It was rice fish -v- rice fish. To begin with they all swam around together in a school but after a few months they started fighting. I now just have 1 male and 1 female and they seem to be very happy together. Perhaps I was just unlucky :-( They never bother any of my other fish.

Cheers Big C

Cheers Basia i'd better tell my Mum to keep a close eye on them. I gotta say they all looked the same to me how do you sex them? :nerd:
