I have a 20 gal tank with 4 Mollies, 4 adult Guppies & 2 guppy fry. The Plec I bought was supposed to be a Bristlenose but is a Common. He has already grown about an inch. The LFS said I can return him so was wondering what else I can put in the tank. Was thinking maybe a couple of Oto's or maybe a couple more guppies. Water stats are all perfect. Ammonia & nitrites 0. Nitrates 40.
Sooner or later these guys will be updated to a 55 gal. Was trying to fishless cycle the larger tank. Left my brother in law at my house for 3 days to take care of animals & came home to a 55 gal with a leak so now I get to start over.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.
BTW, I am kinda partial to livebearers, especially guppies.
You don't say how long your aquarium has been set up so I just wanted to share what little I know about otos. They are considered delicate fish and do not do well in new aquariums less than six months old. Otos need to be kept in groups of no less than 4. If you do go with otos, look for ones with round bellys. There is some type of bacteria they need to have in their stomachs and when they are stressed such as in being shipped to a LFS, this bacteria is destroyed. They can't digest their food without the bacteria, and they starve themselves to death. I have heard it stated that if they live two weeks, then you should be okay. Not so. I have had them for six weeks and then they just die for no apparent reason. I think they are cute little guys, but I gave up after I lost the last of the second batch of them. Maybe I'll try again eventually, but IMHO they are too hard to keep alive.
The tank has been set up almost 5 months now. I got into this hobby with no good info until I found this site. Bad me cycled with fish & lost lots of fish to begin with. Maybe I will just wait awhile before adding any Oto's. I just thought they were cute & knew they could get along with livebearers.
Anyone else have any other suggestions on what would go well with livebearers & are hardy enuf to handle a newer tank. No tetras. The fish don't have to be live bearers but must get along.
I eventually want to move all fish to my 55 gal & keep the 20gal for a fry tank.
