Hi all
I have rescued this fish amongst others from a total idiot.
The tank it was in had no light, no filter, a nonworking heater
and almost black water.

any way I know its a chiclid, but which one. It's about 4" long and 2" deep.
after 1 hr with my bad camera this is the best shot
I hope its good enough.

Possibly a Firemouth Cichlid; Thorichthys meeki.

Yep the picture on fishbase is the same as the one i have :)
Thanks CFC and lucky

Now fishbase say it's harmless, what fish are compatable with it?

Firemouths should be safe with any non Cichlid tankmates that are over 2 inches and dont claim territories.

yep firemouth

what tank is it at the moment?

size?

it needs to be in a 30 gal or higher and good tank mates are severums, convicts, acaras, all those middle sized NWs

Hey Wolf, you're not turning cichlid on us are you??
I've kept Rainbow cichlids and Sajicas (about the same sort of size as firemouths possible) with platies as well, They have all died now, but not from aggression from the cichlids. Although judging by the size of the firemouth I saw in my LFS the other day I don't think they'd last if it got that big!!!
Currently with my Rainbows and Sajicas, I have a bristlenose, Senegal Bichir and African Butterfly fish.

the best route to go is get a 30 gallon or bigger add lots of rocks and driftwood, and a few plastic plants and there you go!!! as for good tank mates really I wouldn't feel comfortable with putting more than one new world in anything less than a 55 gallon tank.

I say the size tank, but I will point out first this is very tempory
like he will be in there untill tomorrow evening at the latest.

He is in a 7.5 gallon tank. this is the only spare tank I have,
I am doing all the reading I can on this species and it is looking very possible he will go into my 72 gallon, I just need to be sure he is not too stressed by the sudden change from bad water to clean water.

Nope, I just had to rescue him and the others from that idiot, who btw
now wants to keep gerbils in that tank. I feel very sorry for them.

thats fine wolf and actually cichlids are more resiliant than you would expect I don't think that there will be much of a change, if anything his colors will become more viabrant. you can also bring out his red more by feeding him small helpings of dried krill and frozen shrimp tails.

i understand

im just happy you saved him

a 72 gal will be great for him, have you stocked it already?

Ok He is now in the 72 gallon.
He has made the center pile of bogwood his home :)
he will let the plec, cae and loaches near it, but no other fish, they get chased.
Well I say chased he moves his head out and they "run"

You know this guy is growing on me, I'm statring to like cichlids

lol,

welcome to our world
