Hi,
I'm new to tropical fish and have had my community tank up and running since April.

Yesterday i bought a new aquarium for the sole purpose of buying a betta.

During one of my frequent visits to garden centres in our area i came across a "Betta starter kit" This consisted of a vase, bit of gravel in the bottom, a little plant stuck in it and a beautiful scarlet coloured betta trying to move around in it.
I expressed my distate to the assistant and asked if she would sell me the Betta (without the vase!)
She eventually agreed to this and i came away with (IMHO) a rescued Betta.
Here is my problem:
My new Betta aquarium is up and running but needs to cycle.
In the meantime i have put my little rescue in the main aquarium in one of those box shape nets. He seems fine and i keep justifying my actions by telling myself that at least he has more room and more favourable conditions than in his previous "home" (I put a plant in there too)
Will it be ok to keep him there till my new tank (Rena aquacube 43L) cycles? I don't want him to stress and i wouldn't want to risk any of my other little darlings nipping him.
Any replies appreciated
Thanks

if the other tanks has a filter take part of your media out of your community and add it to your new tan then give it 24 hours and test the stats if all good then he can go in. congrats on your new boy, whats he like?

congrats on your new little boy, wheres the photo?

Hi and thanks for such a quick reply. Not sure what "media" means?
We are still working on a name for him but he looks just like Blaze. (Beautiful)

The media is a part of the sponge in your other filter, this is where most of the bacteria will be, so if you removed part of it you would be taking the bacteria with it which would help loads with the whole cycling issue, the bacteria is able to double in 24 hours so the main tank won't miss a bit, this way may only take a few days if that where as without it it can take weeks. Aw he looks like my baby, then he must be handsome :shifty:

Hi,
The filtration system in my tanks consists of 7 sponges (different grades) (Have the Juwel vision 180 40gall)
Ghengis (not my idea  honest) seems quite happy in the main tank at the minute. He has actually eaten today which surprised me.
Think he will be fine in there while i do a fishless cycle on his tank. I put some ammonia in this morning so fingers crossed it starts to cycle soon.
Thanks for your help.

Even squeezing a bit of the muck from your other sponges onto your new little filter will speed up your cycling process significantly :good:.

lilfishie, can I just clarify something? When you say transfer some media and leave it 24 hours - I didn't think this was the right thing to do. In that instance, transferring media into an empty tank - unless there is an ammonia source in that tank (i.e. a fish, or added ammonia) then the bacteria will NOT double, but actually die off. I always thought when attempting to clone a tank, you were meant to add the fish and filter simultaneously.

So Kaz1814 if you choose to do that - you still need an ammonia source.

But sounds like you're going to go with the fishless cycle anyway - as I said, a bit of a squeeze from a dirty sponge will speed things up. It's not as good as putting a piece in there, but its similar principle.

I change the top filter (the white one) every week, this catches all the surface muck. I could put this in on top, or underneath the single big sponge in the new tank????
I got some ammonia today and have started adding that.
I appreciate all the advice it really helps.

Thanks

My new tank has cycled and Ghengis is now in his new home. Ungrateful little beggar spent the rest of the day flaring at me
He's much happier today though and seems to have settled well.
I've been doing the mirror thing with him for a couple of minute each day, putting a little hand held one inside the tank. He flares then swims round it to see whats behind it. Who says Betta's are daft!

glad hes doing well, come on technophobe wheres the photos :p

Hi, No idea if this is right but hopefully these are Pics of Ghengis
