Clicky here for good plant planning info....

Clicky here for good quality supplies..

I hear the ADA stuff is more expensive, but top for the substrate, and Tropica plants are again more expensive but good.

Here is another plant supplier.!

Good luck

Substrate...something like TetraPlant or JBL AquaBasis Plus can go below gravel, not ideal to mix them with gravel though. JBL seems to be working well for me, my tank is also 15-gallon ish, with a measly 1wpg and debatable CO2.

I got a £10 bag of JBL and used just over half to give the suggested 2cm depth of it below the gravel that the instructions suggested.

Yeh if you're just wanting something to help the plants, get one of the base layer substrates as nry suggested. Cheap and from what I've heard they work quite well, should be ideal for low light tanks. You could even try the Tropica one, dont know anyone that's used it yet, but no doubt its a great product, given that its from Tropica.

Just chuck what you want over the top.

BTW that Onxy gravel it just fine gravel so not a plant substrate.

ok the bit tht made me think tht was....
"Onyx Gravelâ„¢ is most effective when used alone as an integral substrate bed"
So soil on bottom n gravel over the top ye :) what about my plant selection so far?
Greg

I'm pretty sure the Onyx gravel/sand is marketed as a plant-orientated substrate, although not the best when compared to ADA, eco-complete etc. It's supposed to be very similar to Seachem's flourite, as in it can be used for years without needing replacement. It contains good stores of calcium and amgnesium, as well as other traces link.

I suppose I have vested interest in defending it, as I have Tetraplant substrate covered with a good couple of inches of Onyx sand! :D

looks like i might be heading that way :)
So the plants wht u think about them?
Greg

The Java moss and fern are good, easy plants to grow, however depending on how you fertilise, they may be prone to algea.

The dwarf acorus looked really interesting, until I noticed that plantgeek's database list it as not being a true aquatic? Maybe someone here on the board has some experience of it? It's also not listed by Tropica, giving weight to the arguement.

Also for plants, I can recommend Greenline Plants. I had an order from them a couple of weeks ago, and was very impressed with the quality of the plants, and also the prices. You are able to specify delivery date, if you go for the more expensive p+p (£6), thus ensuring the wife is not around!

Also Aqua Essentials are wonderful too! :)

Just remembered, Themuleous mentioned about the Tropica substrate. Silverlady is currently using it, Link

Cheers mate thanks alot for your input.
Ok im not planning on fertilizing for a while after making the change so i figure algae shouldnt ba problem (FINGERSCROSSED) Probly goin to go with the tetra or tropica after reading that thread. I let u all know how it goes!
Cheers
