Well its not exactly replanting, but I am possibly moving soon, and in which case I can upgrade my tank, probably either a Rio 125 or a Rio 180. (Plus even if I don't im going to get rid of the sand in my Rekord 70 and replace it with gravel and plants.)

I have had a heavily planted tank before but had no carpet of plant at the front of the aquarium.

I am wondering how do you go about cleaning the gravel if you can't see it? Presumably it still needs to be cleaned somehow.

Will my loaches get on with a planted fish tank? I still plan on having some rocks scattered about at one corner of the fish tank for the Kuhli loaches.

Thankyou for your time,

Tim

Couldn't you just stick with the sand as a substrate? If you do I know you'll need to use fertilizers (but thats all I know for that matter).

The kuhli loaches benefit the plants by eating waste plant matter around the roots which in turn helps out the kuhli loaches. :)

You don't need to clean gravel under a plant carpet.

^ Agreed, if it is a carpet plant such as HC cuba the roots will use up any anaerobic matter that reaches them, and then you just lightly hoover just above the carpet to remove anything that has settled on top.

You can have a sand substrate with planted aquariums. Your loaches will love it. I usually have two layers. One more coarse, then capped with a thicker, finer cap. But it's not necessary.

And are the plants as easy to manage with sand substrate?

If I want ?HC? covering at the front will this grow aswell?

How thick would I be looking to have the sand throughout the aquarium if I wanted to plant it?

Thanks for your replies.

Hmm HC cuba does best in high light and stable co2. Thats not to say it wont grow, it just may grow slowly or go leggy.
