Hey. I was just wondering how you could tell when to replace a filter sponge. The one in my Fluval has been used continuously for about five years  and it still looks perfectly useable.

It hasn't started to rot or anything like that. Is there really any need to replace it?

given you above description, no there is no need to replace it

Five years? That's awesome!!! Think about all the money you saved. Wolf's right, as long as it isn't falling apart and you can clean it enough that you get good waterflow though it keep using it.

Is it that out of the ordinary for a filter sponge to last so long?

It is from a very old filter so it might have been before sponges were made differently so they would rot and have to be replaced.

I think it is made from a fiberglass strand type of thing but I am not sure... fibreglass lasts forever though
