im going to get rid of my two 6 in plecos and want to replace them what should i get. Im thinking of something kool looking and not ugly, also i want one that is pretty common in pet store. what should i get
id suggest corys because their soo cute
unless you have algae problems you can get a couple snails for the algae because im pretty sure they eat it
or you can get a cooler pleco, zebras look cool but i hear they dont do much (from what ive heard)
One of the reasons im getting rid of my plecos is that their getting to big so i want something that grows slowly or generaly stays under 10". Also i HATE snails ther taking over my tank as it is so one thing im thinking of getting are loaches because i heard some eat snails. But i cant decide what to get
I would go for a Stripped Talking Catfish or a Pyjama Catfish (Synodontis flavitaeniatus). The talking cat is easy to find and the pyjama is harder to find. Ask your LFS if they could get one in and you may find your LFS is un sure wheter to get some and you start them buying them!
Have you thought about weather loaches? They only get to be 6-8 inches long and about 1/2 to 3/4 inch tall. I have 2 and they are active and fun to watch. They are also peaceful and will get along with your other fish quite well.
Your gouramis will eat the snails if you crush them against the glass to break their shells.
However, I think these fish are better suited to a coldwater environment or at most a cool tropical one. I have had mine in both and mine is much happier in the coldwater tank. What tempature is your tank?
Weather loaches are comfortable in warmer water, too. Originally I kept mine with goldfish and African Clawed Frogs. Now I've changed my 55 gallon tank to be a cory tank, but kept the loaches in there. The temperature is 76-78 and they are doing very well.
Here's a link to an old thread where we discussed them:
I have kept both colour varients of the weather loach in tropical and coldwater environments and as Inchworm said they adapt equally as well to either enviroment.
