I recently upgraded my tank and took the oppertunity to bleach dip the plants that were infested with staghorn algae. It had stopped growing for a month or two, so I figured now was the time to strike. Naturally, the staghorn has died off and is coming off in clumps.

Problem is, it's coming off in clumps. I've had to clean my filter out twice in two days, now, and have started to suck up the loose staghorn with a turkey baster. Anyone got any good tips for removing the dead algae, or am I pretty much doing what's possible already?

what kind of filter are you using ? you could stuff the filer intake with a coarse sponge so the dead algae collects there

It's an Aquaclear 20, so the intake is smallish. A prefilter was about where my mind was headed, too. It'd be a good temporary addition to my filter until the algae has dissapated.

a HOB :D ok i didnt meant stuff the inside... errr place a foam in the intake so that the intake looks like a normal sponge filter :p hehehe il try to look for a picture now

something like this maybe ?

Yep. I was under the impression that sponge on the intake of a HOB was called "Prefilter"?
