A LFS has told me that the filter in a Juwel tank needs to be removed once a month and cleaned externally. I've had a Juwel tank for 2 years and have never done this. Does the filter need to come out and can it actually be removed?

The actual filter does come out - not the black housing box, just the filter. Have you ever cleaned the filter media? To take out the filter, first disconnect the outlet pipe, then just pull out the filter (don't forget to turn it off first). The filter itself is in 2 or 3 parts depending on what size tank you have (larger tanks with larger filters are 3 parts). Take the filter apart, clean the parts in tank water (not in the tank), put back together and put it back in the filter house. Connect the outlet pipe and job done.

the filter is glued to the tank, so for maintaining it you cant move it unless you use a chisel or something, so the lfs guy is wrong. maybe he meant removing the insides to clean it?

No, he definitely reckons the housing comes out, I change/clean the filter media as the manual says, the tank has been stocked for nearly 2 years without problem. Just thought I would ask and just check I was right and he was wrong.

Thanks.

The only time I would imagine that you ever need to take the black filter housing out of a tank is to disgard it for a different system. You do not need to clean behind it.

The only thing I would say is to either fill the space under the housing completely with gravel to stop fish going under there or to scoop the gravel under there out peridically so as to vacuum right in there. I have quite a few fish who hide out under there to get some peace and quiet and so I remove the big tube off of the end of the syphon and just use the skinny hose to reach in there to get the poop out.

I tryed once to remove the housing unit but no way would it shift, do you have to use a vacum in the housing unit as i never have.

It is recommended that once in a while you remove all the innared of the filter out (heater, powerhead etc), and vacuum all the crud out of the bottom of the housing.

I clean the heater and power head often and clean the sides in the housing unit, but never cleaned the bottom.

You need to vac in the bottom of the housing regulaly. You will not believe the amount of crap that collects down there.

Beware of sucking up small fisk like fry or khulies that like to hide in the filter though.
