Relocated 5 Grams Of Pure Mean ..

I have had to take a male Red Wag Platy out of the main tank (community tank 60 Gal) and dump him on his own in the hospital (25 Gal) ... why ?

Because he has turned into 5 grams of pure nastiness, he is bugging the crap out of a specific female 24 / 7 although there are 4 others in the tank. He won't stop chasing other fish when they get anywhere he can see them and I do mean anywhere and the tank is 5 feet long - it tires me out just watching him !!.

Today was the last straw and he was attacking anything coming into his view like something deranged so for the sake of the others I chased him today and rehoused him.

I have put up with his antisocial nastiness for a few weeks now but instead of getting better he was getting worse and starting not only chasing but to nip at anything he saw. This fish used to be so placid but talk about Jeckyl and Hyde ..

Is this normal Platy behaviour?

Feel kind of guilty with him in the hospital tank on his own, he has been going up and down one corner of the tank now for 2 hours - the main tank seems a lot more relaxed though .... apart from darting about every time they see me now ...

If he spends some time in isolation will he calm down or is he no longer a 'fit for the community' fish ...

You can leave him in the solo tank for a couple of days them reintroduce him to the community tank. If he still does it try to isolate him again. (like a time out for achild) I had to do a molly that way 3 or 4 times before she chilled out. She is fine now. Some will learn and some won't. After doing this a few times you will be able to tell if it is going to work. You can also try moving the decor around a little just before you put him back in. I have heard that helps with some fish that are territorial. I don't think those fish are, but you can try. It can't hurt. I hope this helps.

As you can see from my thread I too have a mean,lean grouchy machine.
Someone advised me to introduce another female, but I think he will just chase both of them !

Can't handle it anymore;I thought keeping fish was relaxing !? No such luck as at the moment I can't bare to look into the tank and feel so sorry for 'Bubbles' the victim in all this.

There's nothing left to do but take 'Beefy Bob' back to the lfs.
I shall get a small male and another female so hopefully the girls will be too much for him to bully.

Hope you sort out your problem. Pity platty fights are illegal; put a massive bet on mine.

i had this with a sword tail and it kept bullying the gouramis so that has been moved but i noticed one one has gone another becomes the leader and does the same....
