Reliable Source: Stunted Fish/gold Fish Requirements

I need to find a reliable source, to prove that fish become stunted when placed in an aquarium smaller than they should be in. My girlfriend's friend's father has some goldfish in what appears to be a 20 gallon tank. I mentioned it to my girlfriend and of course she proceeded to tell her friend which told her father. The guy now wants to debate the issue with me. I'd like to have some printed material from a reliable source, one he can not refute so that I don't have to just explain it to him with nothing to back me up. Any other route the guy will say the fish are still alive and are ok.

i dont know if you can actually call it stunting the growth or killing the fish....some fish do not matter what size tank they are in they will keep growing until the small tank kills them. might keep that in mind

I don't have any, but perhaps you should try posting in the coldwater section as well. You may get more results, but I could be wrong. Good luck, I hope you win this debate!

My sister kept a common plec in a ten gallon for over 3 years. He reached ten inches in about 2 years and nearly stopped growing. If a common is kept in say a 75 gallon tank he should reach that size in a little over a year I believe and eventually max out at a little over 20 inches. Hope that helps
