Refugium?

I got my Dr. Foster and Smith catalog today and I saw a refugium in there. I was wondering what this is and what is its purpose?

They use them in marine setups, not sure on the details.I know it's part of the filter sequence and is a refuge for something.... I'm sure someone who knows exactly will be along soon !

They're generally places where you can keep things like macro algae and allow small beneficial crustceans to develop away from the predators in the main part of the tank (a refuge if you like ). Normally as part of a sump, they also add to the overall water volume of the tank.
