No self-respecting Marine Aquarist would be seen dead with a Hydrometer these days

is that a threat argggh :rip: :rip:

yeah i know hate the bl**dy things so gonna start with the refractometer

Hydrometer's  i brought one when i started, they are pretty useless, it only really gave me a rough ball park figure at best, i used it a couple of times then gave up.

Just to add to the rest. A refractometer measures salinity by the refraction of light due to the salt in the water. They're used all over the place to test other things such as alcohol.

£30-35 will get you one that works well :)

ok thanks

For the purpose of this forum section a Refractometer is used for measuring Specific Gravity and Salinity (amount of dissolved salts) in our marine aquarium water.
Refractometers utilise the refractive index principle and are used for many different liquids to ascertain various values using a different scale within the lens.
