Its important to understand the water conditions you have as this will influence the type of fish you can sucessfully keep. Generally, hard water suits African cichlids and soft water suits South American and Asian cichlids. There is more to it than this, but youi get the idea.
You can change the hardness and other conditions of your tank water but should understand what you have/need before you try to decide on what type to go for.
Maybe a good place to start is to take a look at what your tap water is like - if you favour fish which suit the tap water ph then your water changes and general maintainence will be easier.
