Hi, this problem has literally just surfaced/been noticed in the last few hours and it is a fairly easily spotted oddity. My Red Tailed Shark has appeared with his fin pretty much looking like it has a piece of food stuck to it and I have no idea whats wrong with him. I'd appreciate any help to solve this problem.

Here is a picture:

looks to me like it *might* be fin rot, but i'd wait for a more experienced person's id, as i'm still pretty new to all this.
good luck

We really need some more info before we can help. How big is the tank, how long has it been set up, what other fish are in there, what kind of filtration are you running?

How often and how much do you change the water/maintain your filter.

Can you get your water tested and post the results?

It does look rather like fin rot, but, as I've just been saying on another thread, fin rot/fungus is normally a symptom of something else wrong rather than a disease in itself.

It could be as simple as the fish injuring itself on something that has allowed the fungal infection to take a hold, but it could possibly be something else, lymphocystis, for instance.
