Red Tail & Bala

Would a red tail shark and a couple balas get along?

I think this would depend on the personality of the Red Tail. I don't think the Balas would be a problem (other than they size they can reach) but I have read various posts about the Red Tails and some are described as the tank A**holes, while others are the tank wimps.

as long as there is only one red tail and the bala's are his size or bigger it should be ok. the bala's will outgrow him and with strength in numbers (I would keep 3 bala's, they like company) they should be fine.

I have a redtail in with my balas and they do fine together the one I have the most problems with is my mean rump angel fish it whips everything in the tank. One of the angels is a little sweetheart and the other one is a monster. Even the black shark runs from it The best shark I have is the rainbow shark he dont bother either one of the other sharks in my tank. That is all I keep in one tank is my sharks I have the redtail and the rainbow and the balas and my black shark in my 55 gallon now they get along fine as of now. That could change at any given time I raised them from babies together I guess that is the reason I dont have much trouble.

If you put the redtail in a time after the balas it would give them an advantage, and hopefully make the redtail a little more accepting of them. The more balas you have again the better advantage they have, also try to get a redtail that quite abit smaller than the balas for the same reason.

redtails can be sods, but they are so pretty, and with the right tank, and good luck, they are worth it.

i have two balas and a red tail....at first the red tail chased them around ....no nipping or anything serious. The other week i made a pile of big rocks that had may crevases and holes he could go into. Now he is too busy exploring to go chase the balas. It keeps him busy

Just give the red-tail enough hidey places and the balas plenty of room to cruise - and they should be just fine!
