When i first got my red rubin sword about a year ago, i assumed it would be a tall plant, so i put it in the back of my tank. However, instead of growing UP, the leaves fanned out, laying more horizotally than vertically, so i moved it to the middle of the tank. Now, i've noticed that the leaves are starting to grow UP and it is becoming a tall plant like i thought it was supposed to be in the beginning, only now that i've moved it to the middle of my tank, i'd really prefer that it lay back down again! What is causing it to grow UP now? How is it supposed to grow normally?

normally it will be a combination of them both. they can grow up initally and then out.
it maybe a number of factors in your tank.

do you dose/inject a form of co2?
" " " " ferts?

what are you lighting levels?

my guess is that you have moved it into an area with a different intensity of light.

I use DIY CO2. I dose ferts about twice weekly. It's hard to guage my lighting levels because i use 4 of those shop type lights w/gro light bulbs rather than flourencents or t-5s or whatever. It's better lighting than what came with the tank, but it isn't super great. Recently i had to break down the whole tank for a move. That's the only thing that's really changed recently, but i put the plant back in basically the same spot as before i think...
